Buckingham Fountain, designed by Edgar H. Bennett, was inspired by a fountain at the Palace of Versailles and was meant to represent Lake Michigan with four sea horses surrounding it, each one symbolizing the four states that border Lake Michigan: Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan and Indiana.
